Sputum Test

A sputum test examines material coughed up from the lower airways. MedeScope Healthcare Center provides sputum investigations and clear guidance on how to collect a good-quality sample.

What it is

Sputum is the thick fluid produced in the lungs and lower airways, which is different from saliva. A sputum sample is collected in a sterile container and processed through the diagnostic workflow for the investigations requested by your healthcare professional.

Why it may be recommended

A sputum test may be advised to help evaluate a persistent cough or other respiratory symptoms, to monitor a known respiratory condition, or as part of certain medical examination requirements. The results support assessment by a qualified healthcare professional and are not a diagnosis on their own.

What patients can expect

You will be given a sterile container and instructions. A good sample usually comes from a deep cough, often first thing in the morning. More than one sample may be requested depending on the investigation.

How the service works

  1. 1Contact the center and share the investigation required or your prescription.
  2. 2Collect the sterile container and detailed instructions from the center.
  3. 3Produce a deep-cough sample as instructed, usually in the early morning.
  4. 4Return the sample to the center promptly, or as advised.
  5. 5The sample is processed and the report is provided for professional interpretation.

Preparation

Rinse your mouth with plain water before collecting the sample to reduce contamination with saliva and food particles. Take a few deep breaths and then cough deeply to bring up sputum rather than saliva.

Home collection availability

Sample collection instructions and containers can often be arranged for home use so you can produce an early-morning sample, subject to service availability. Please confirm the process with the center.

This information is general and does not provide a medical diagnosis. A test does not by itself confirm or rule out a condition. Please discuss your results and what they mean with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
