Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a group of breathing tests that measure how much air the lungs can hold and how quickly air can be moved in and out. MedeScope Healthcare Center provides PFT for health checkups and medical examination requirements.
What it is
The most common PFT is spirometry. You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a machine and follow the technician's instructions to breathe in fully and blow out as hard and long as you can. The machine records the volumes and flow rates.
Why it may be recommended
A PFT may be advised to help evaluate breathing-related symptoms, to monitor a known respiratory condition, to check lung function before certain work roles, or as part of a comprehensive or insurance medical examination.
What patients can expect
The test involves repeated breathing efforts and usually takes around 15–30 minutes. It requires effort and cooperation, and the technician will coach you through each attempt. You may be asked to repeat efforts to get consistent readings.
How the service works
- 1Visit the center at your appointment time.
- 2The technician explains the manoeuvres and fits a nose clip and mouthpiece.
- 3You perform several guided breathing efforts, with rests in between.
- 4The best consistent readings are recorded.
- 5The report is prepared for interpretation by a qualified healthcare professional.
Preparation
Avoid a heavy meal just before the test and wear loose clothing that does not restrict your chest. Ask the center whether to withhold any inhaler or medication beforehand, and avoid smoking for a few hours prior if possible.
